Play Dough :) Day

For school today we did a manipulative. Using your hands and fingers is a wonderful way for your kiddos to learn there letters and numbers. They can move it around and feel it. So for handwriting today we did the play dough thing. We always make our own because who wants to spend the money when you have it in the cupboard and we all know about my little all natural,organic, homesteading dream..... :)Sonia, you too:))
Today, we made our salt play dough because that was all I had in the house. I will share our other recipes for play dough too. Here you go.. Enjoy


Salt Play dough



1 cup salt

1 cup water

½ cup flour



Mix ingredients and cook over medium heat. Remove from heat when thick and rubbery. As mixture cools, knead in enough flour to make a workable dough.


Modeling Clay



2 cups salt

2/3 cup water

1 cup cornstarch

½ cup water (cold)



Stir salt and water over heat for about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in cornstarch and cold water. Mix until smooth, return to heat and cook until thick. Cool before using. Store in plastic bag.

REAL Play dough (so they say)



1 cup flour

1 cup water

1 T oil

1 T powdered alum

½ cup salt

2 T vanilla

food coloring

Mix all dry ingredients. Add oil and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until reaching the consistency of mashed potatoes. Remove from heat and add vanilla and food coloring. Divide into balls and work in color by kneading.

Nature's Playdough

1 cup flour

½ cup salt

1 cup water

2 T oil

2 T cream of tartar

beet, spinach, and carrot juice



Mix flour, salt and oil, and slowly add the water. Cook over med. heat, stirring until dough becomes stiff. Turn out onto wax paper and let cool. Knead the dough with your hands until of proper consistency. Use as is, or divide into balls and add a few drops of the vegetable juices to make green, pink, and orange.
